The fifth book in the Culture series is a novel of the far future by Iain M. Banks, one of the present-day masters of science fiction. The eponymous artifact was discovered in a remote corner of space, beside a dying star billions of years old. It was a perfect black body. And it did absolutely nothing—until it disappeared.
