Alisa Rosenbaum was born in pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg to a prosperous Jewish family. When the Bolsheviks requisitioned the pharmacy owned by her father, Fronz, the Rosenbaums fled to the Crimea. Alisa returned to the city (renamed Leningrad) to attend the university, but in 1926 relatives who had already settled in America offered her the chance of joining them there. With money from the sale of her mother's jewelry, Alisa bought a ticket to New York. She moved swiftly to Hollywood, where she learned English, worked in the RKO wardrobe department and as an extra, and wrote through the night on screenplays and novels. She also married a bit-part actor called Frank O'Connor because he was 'beautiful' - and because her original visitor's visa had run out.Rand sold her first screenplay in 1932, but nobody would buy her first novel We the Living (1936) a melodrama set in Russia. Her first real success was The Fountainhead (rejected by more than ten publishers before publication in 1943).She started a new philosophy known as Objectivism, opposed to state interference of all kinds, and her follow-up novel Atlas Shrugged (1957) describes a group who attempt to escape America's conspiracy of mediocrity. Objectivism has been an influence on various other movements such as Libertarianism, and Rand's vocal support for Laissez-faire Capitalism and the free market has earned her a distinct spot among American philosophers, and philosophers in general.---

Albert Camus (1913-1960) was a representative of non-metropolitan French literature. His origin in Algeria and his experiences there in the thirties were dominating influences in his thought and work. Of semi-proletarian parents, early attached to intellectual circles of strongly revolutionary tendencies, with a deep interest in philosophy (only chance prevented him from pursuing a university career in that field), he came to France at the age of twenty-five. Of semi-proletarian parents, early attached to intellectual circles of strongly revolutionary tendencies, with a deep interest in philosophy (only chance prevented him from pursuing a university career in that field), he came to France at the age of twenty-five. The man and the times met: Camus joined the resistance movement during the occupation and after the liberation was a columnist for the newspaper Combat. But his journalistic activities had been chiefly a response to the demands of the time; in 1947 Camus retired from political journalism and, besides writing his fiction and essays, was very active in the theatre as producer and playwright (e.g., Caligula, 1944). He also adapted plays by Calderon, Lope de Vega, Dino Buzzati, and Faulkner's Requiem for a Nun. His love for the theatre may be traced back to his membership in L'Equipe, an Algerian theatre group, whose "collective creation" Révolte dans les Asturies (1934) was banned for political reasons. The essay Le Mythe de Sisyphe (The Myth of Sisyphus), 1942, expounds Camus's notion of the absurd and of its acceptance with "the total absence of hope, which has nothing to do with despair, a continual refusal, which must not be confused with renouncement - and a conscious dissatisfaction". Meursault, central character of L'Étranger (The Stranger), 1942, illustrates much of this essay: man as the nauseated victim of the absurd orthodoxy of habit, later - when the young killer faces execution - tempted by despair, hope, and salvation. Dr. Rieux of La Peste (The Plague), 1947, who tirelessly attends the plague-stricken citizens of Oran, enacts the revolt against a world of the absurd and of injustice, and confirms Camus's words: "We refuse to despair of mankind. Without having the unreasonable ambition to save men, we still want to serve them". Other well-known works of Camus are La Chute (The Fall), 1956, and L'Exil et le royaume (Exile and the Kingdom), 1957. His austere search for moral order found its aesthetic correlative in the classicism of his art. He was a stylist of great purity and intense concentration and rationality.Camus was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1959.Camus died on 4 January 1960 at the age of 46, in a car accident near Sens, in Le Grand Fossard in the small town of Villeblevin. His wife and brother had died, the magazine he and his brother had started collapsed under its load of debt, and Dostoyevsky was threatened with debtors prison. Under such circumstances, he could have remained in Wiesbaden, but instead he chose to flee to Russia. After borrowing money, he pawned his clothes and begged friends for loans, even offering to take a job as a lowly copyist if they would give him a stake so that he could get home. Upon arriving in Russia, he wrote the novel Crime and Punishment, which catapulted him to fame as one of Russia's greatest writers.

Crime and Punishment

Everyone has feared the unknown at some point in their lifetime, whether it be a monster hiding under their bed or another human who threatens their safety. In Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, Prince Myshkin is a character who has been sheltered from the outside world. He has been away from Russia most of his life, and when he returns it is safe to say that he is oblivious to the way of thinking around him. While the majority of society was plotting, scheming, and worrying about money and power, Prince Myshkin was merely living and enjoying his time with others.

Dostoevsky’s best-known novel, Notes from Underground, marks the dividing line between nineteenth- and twentieth-century writing and the vision of self each century embodied. One of the most remarkable characters in literature, the unnamed narrator, is a former official who has defiantly withdrawn into an underground existence. In full retreat from society, he scrawls a passionate, obsessive, self-contradictory narrative that serves as a devastating attack on social utopians and an assertion of man’s essentially irrational nature. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky provide us with this brilliantly faithful edition of this classic novel, conveying all the tragedy and tormented comedy in its original Russian.

Notes from Underground

Dostoevsky’s novel Demons is a prophetic and ferociously funny masterpiece of ideology and murder in pre-revolutionary Russia. Inspired by the true story of a political murder that horrified Russians in 1869, Dostoevsky conceived of Demons as a novel pamphlet in which he would say everything about the plague of materialist ideology that he saw infecting his native land.

Demons

The Brothers Karamazov is a murder mystery, a courtroom drama, and an exploration of erotic rivalry in a series of triangular love affairs involving Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, his three sons―Dmitri, Ivan, and Alyosha―and the “wicked and sentimental” Dmitri’s wife. Through the gripping events of their story, Dostoevsky portrays the whole of Russian life at the time: its social and spiritual striving. This award-winning translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky remains true to the verbal inventiveness of Dostoevsky’s prose, while preserving allusions to contemporary events that may now be obscure to readers. It is an achievement worthy of Dostoevsky’s last and greatest novel.
