Good to Great

Jim Collins is an American researcher, author, speaker and consultant focused on the subject of business management and company sustainability and growth.

How do the mighty fall? In this book, Jim Collins tackled the question by looking at historical examples. He sought to determine what sort of factors led companies like IBM and Xerox to their downfall. What he found was that there is a five-step process or recipe for corporate suicide. The steps are: 1) Hubris Born of Success, 2) Undisciplined Pursuit of More, 3) Denial of Risk and Peril, 4) Grasping for Salvation, and 5) Capitulation to Irrelevance or Death. By understanding how companies fall from even their loftiest of heights, we can take measures to avoid the same fate.

How the Mighty Fall

Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the 21st century.

Beyond Entrepreneurship

The new study: Great by Choice distinguishes itself from Good to Great by its focus on the kind of unstable environments faced by leaders today. The new findings: Great by Choice describes how leaders increase their personal discipline and develop greater trust in the process of learning, while also making fast decisions and taking decisive action more reliable than they would be if they worried about what everyone else was doing. This research was supported by the Kellogg Innovation Fund at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
