John Kott—an American marksman gone bad—has escaped from prison and is wanted for the attempted assassination of the president of France. State Department investigators believe that the mafia had a hand in Kott's escape, but no leads can be found. Jack Reacher, who was once enlisted for assistance by the CIA, takes it upon himself to track down Kott and save the French president at all costs.
