Description
In 1774, Eugenia Stanhope, the impoverished widow of Philip Stanhopes illegitimate son, published Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman—the first book written as a series of letters. Begun in the 1730s by Chesterfield and continued after his death in 1768, these letters mainly focused on geography, history, and classical literature. Written in French, English, and Latin to help refine his son's grasp of languages, the letters were begun when Philip was thirteen years old.
