Takeaways
Description
Stefan Zweig's Beware of Pity is a beautiful work that reveals the depths of a human soul. Hofmiller, an Austro-Hungarian cavalry officer stationed at the edge of the empire, is invited to a party at the home of a rich local landowner. Hofmiller asks his host's lovely daughter for a dance, but she is crippled with sickness and can't walk with him. Throughout Beware of Pity, Hofmiller struggles with guilt and pity as he tries to help this young girl regain her health. Stefan Zweig was a master anatomist of deceitful hearts, which comes through in his work.
