Takeaways
Description
In August 1914, days before the outbreak of the First World War, explorer Ernest Shackleton set sail for the Antarctic with a crew of twenty-seven in pursuit of one last great prize: a human crossing on foot of that continent. After their ship, Endurance, became trapped by ice, they had come within 85 miles of their destination when their ship was crushed like matchwood. For 20 months they would be stranded on ice floes until they finally made two near-fatal attempts to escape in open boats before being rescued.
