My Family and Other Animals

Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals tells about his time in Greece when he was a kid. He had a crazy family that kept all these pets like scorpions, snakes, geckos and owls. One pet skeleton was even being taken around by one of his sisters to show off to people, while another sister brought home a baby boa constrictor snake that her schoolmates were afraid to touch! His brother also liked guns and kept taking them apart, which made the neighbors nervous because they thought he might accidentally kill somebody.
