Avid Reader

Following essay-writing that helped him get into Cambridge, Robert Gottlieb briefly worked in Macy's greeting-card department before he found a job at Simon and Schuster. At Simon and Schuster, Gottlieb discovered and edited Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, which became a bestseller. Gottlieb later went on to edit authors such as Toni Morrison, John Cheever, Doris Lessing, John le Carré, Michael Crichton, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Graham, Robert Caro, Nora Ephron, and Bill Clinton--as well as Bruno Bettelheim and Miss Piggy.
