The Evolving Self is a detailed examination of the trials and tribulations of human beings as they attempt to make sense of who they are. Written by Robert Kegan, a Harvard University psychologist, it describes the making of meaning as a lifelong activity that begins in infancy and continues through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and into old age. The central aspect of this process involves drawing lines between self and other. According to Kegan’s use of Piagetian theory, each stage is an attempt at finding a solution to the tension between these polarities, which ultimately comes with an increased awareness that all experiences are unique to the individual.

As parents and partners, employees and bosses, citizens and leaders, we constantly confront a bewildering array of expectations, prescriptions, claims, and demands, as well as an equally confusing assortment of expert opinions that tell us what each of these roles entails.

In Over Our Heads

Most companies expect too much from their people and reward them accordingly. The result: an increasing number of disengaged employees. What if a company did everything in its power to create a culture in which everyone—not just the superstars—could overcome their own internal barriers to change and use errors and vulnerabilities as prime opportunities for personal and company growth? Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey (and their collaborators) have found such companies—Deliberately Developmental Organizations.
