Takeaways
Description
The authors argue that racism is not rooted in the perception of human difference but, rather, in the practice of racism. Through what they call “race craft,” Americans learned to create the illusion of race, and this phenomenon occurred at the same time as other forms of inequality were institutionalized in American life. Given how pervasive the devices of race craft have been in American history, economic doctrine, politics and everyday thinking, it's easy to forget that race craft even exists, but as Fields and Fields point out, a legitimate language for understanding inequality has yet to exist.
