A Different Way to Win

In his role as the legendary founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dan Rooney will forever be known for his exceptional business acumen and personal kindness. His most important achievements, however, took place off the playing field as he sought to bring about equity in the league’s hiring practices and peace in his ancestral homeland of Ireland. While he was always known to support equal opportunity in sports and education, he also fought tirelessly for a better life for the Irish people. While he would have preferred that everyone agreed with him, Rooney understood that compromise is an important part of everyday life. While he may not have been a household name in America, Rooney was a man who quietly changed lives and made the world better by simply being among us.
