With the new facts and step-by-step program in this revolutionary book, you can sleep better and live longer. Sleep quality has been shown to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity, outperforming diet, exercise, and heredity. Despite this, we are a sleep-deprived society, oblivious to the truths of sleep—and the cost of sleep deprivation. Dr. William Dement, founder and director of the Stanford University Sleep Research Center, explains what happens when we sleep, what happens when we dont, and how we can reclaim the most powerful—and underappreciated—health miracle of all in this groundbreaking book based on decades of research on the frontiers of sleep science. Dr. Dement takes us on a fascinating tour of our sleeping body and mind, revealing the cost of disregarding sleep: an epidemic of heart disease, 33% of traffic-fatigue-related accidents, and incalculable mental and psychological consequences. And he provides a hands-on prescription for vibrant good health and longevity, which includes... self-tests to determine how much sleep you really need... the role of prescription and over-the-counter sleeping aids... the latest research on how sleep affects the immune system... how to combat insomnia, snoring, and jet lag... plus information on sleep disorder clinics nationwide.
