I'm the product of a happy and uneventful childhood in the suburbs of Cleveland, followed by a happy and pretty eventful four years as a student at University of Michigan. From there, I wandered to the West Coast, landing in Portland, Oregon, where I managed (somehow) to get a job as a writer. This had been my dream, of course, but I had no experience and no credentials. What I did have, in spades, was an abiding passion for storytelling and sentence-making. I fell in love with the experience of writing, and I've never stopped. From Portland, I moved to Boston, where I wrote for the Phoenix and the Globe, and then to New York, where I began writing for magazines, and, in 1987, published my first piece in The New Yorker. The autobiography of Nelson Mandela is riveting, both a brilliant description of an evil system and a testament to the power of the spirit to transcend it. Nelson Mandela was one of the great human rights icons of his time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the liberation of South African blacks won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. After his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela was at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's antiapartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving that nation toward racial reconciliation and majority rule. His name is still revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights.

Long Walk to Freedom

Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.

This updated edition of Mandela's biography provides an in-depth look at the man who grew up in a rural village in South Africa under racist apartheid rule--a regime he ultimately helped overthrow. The book explores the history of South Africa and it's often violent struggle for civil rights, while tracing Mandela's role in that history. Denenberg, a lawyer and former news correspondent, exposes the myths surrounding Mandela's life and legacy, while illuminating his tremendous influence on all humanity.
