What Richard Feynman’s reading reveals is that a suspicion of book-learning
is not the same as never being shaped by a book — it just raises the bar. Two
texts cleared it, and both did the same thing: they handed a young Feynman a
tool or a problem he could take apart and make his own. The first was
Calculus for the Practical Man. Teaching himself calculus from it at
fifteen was formative not only mathematically but psychologically — he
remembered it as the moment he realised he could grasp things the adults around
him could not, the seed of a lifelong confidence in reasoning from first
principles rather than authority.
The second was Dirac’s The Principles of Quantum Mechanics. Dirac
was Feynman’s hero, and Feynman owned, signed and heavily annotated the book as
a young man. In his 1965 Nobel Lecture he pointed to its final sentence — "It
seems that some essentially new physical ideas are here needed" — as the
challenge that set him to work. The path-integral formulation that won him the
Nobel is, in a real sense, Feynman’s answer to the last line of Dirac’s book:
a case of a single sentence in a single book redirecting a life.
Around those two sit stories rather than cards. His father read him the
Encyclopaedia Britannica as a boy, teaching him to translate every
fact into something concrete — the famous dinosaur "in our front yard." A Dirac
journal paper, discovered in a Princeton library, seeded the path-integral idea
directly. But the honest shape of Feynman as a reader is exactly this: not a
curator of favourites but a scientist who trusted almost nothing he had not
reconstructed himself, and who was permanently marked by the rare book that
gave him something worth rebuilding. It is the smallest reading list in this
collection, and one of the most revealing.
