On the Genealogy of Morals and Ecce Homo

In his major work on ethics, Nietzsche uses philosophy, psychology, and classical philology in an effort to give new direction to an ancient discipline. The work consists of three essays. In the first essay, Nietzsche contrasts master morality and slave morality and indicates how the term good has widely different meanings in each. In the second inquiry, he discusses guilt and the bad conscience. The third essay is on ascetic ideals—not only in religion, but also in academia. In Ecce Homo (1888), written shortly before his collapse, Nietzsche reviews his life and works. He interprets his writings with insight and vigor, offering a fascinating look at Nietzsches own perspectives as well as at what influenced them.
