Takeaways
Description
When the North Vietnamese launched the Tet Offensive in 1968, they attacked more than a hundred cities across South Vietnam. The centerpiece of the offensive was Hue, a city in which 10,000 NLF troops descended on and took control of, with only two small military outposts holding out. American commanders refused to believe that the National Liberation Front had amassed such a large force and ordered small companies of marines to take the city block by block and building by building. Finally, Lieutenant Colonel Ernie Cheatham came up with a strategy to retake Hue: he surrounded the city with thousands of his men and attacked.
