The captivating and spirited narrative of Rubin Hurricane Carter—a twentieth-century icon and controversial victim of the U. S. justice system turned spokesperson for the wrongfully convicted—is revealed in Eye of the Hurricane: My Path from Darkness to Freedom, a moving self-portrait of his own life's journey. From childhood on through his wrongful incarceration and after, Dr. Carter explains in vivid detail how he survived a series of prisons, from a young boy's reform school to a lonely cell in New Jersey State Prison to solitary confinement at Trenton State Prison for ten years—all for a crime he did not commit. In this spiritual autobiography, Dr. Carter explores his personal philosophy, born of the unimaginable duress of wrongful imprisonment and conceived through his defiance of the brutal institution of prison and solitary confinement. His is not a comfortable story or a comfortable philosophy, but it holds hope for those who have none and serves as a call to action for those who abhor injustice. Eye of the Hurricane is an extraordinary tale that may well change the way we view crime and punishment in this new millennium.
