Takeaways
Description
The history of professional wrestling in the United States is a story that up to now has never been fully told. While professional wrestling was originally a legitimate sport, it fell into decline after the Great Depression. The sport's fortunes changed, however, in the 1980s, when it began to appear regularly on cable television. This allowed wrestlers to develop  fame not only as athletes (in the ring) but also as actors and television personalities. Today many wrestlers are well known for their appearances in movies and on TV as well as for their performances inside the ring.
