I'm the product of a happy and uneventful childhood in the suburbs of Cleveland, followed by a happy and pretty eventful four years as a student at University of Michigan. From there, I wandered to the West Coast, landing in Portland, Oregon, where I managed (somehow) to get a job as a writer. This had been my dream, of course, but I had no experience and no credentials. What I did have, in spades, was an abiding passion for storytelling and sentence-making. I fell in love with the experience of writing, and I've never stopped. From Portland, I moved to Boston, where I wrote for the Phoenix and the Globe, and then to New York, where I began writing for magazines, and, in 1987, published my first piece in The New Yorker. For eight years, American Green Berets fought in the jungles of Laos and Cambodia, conducting covert operations under a top-secret military program called SOG. They waged a relentless campaign against the enemy, even when they were outnumbered 10-to-1. Go deep into the jungle with five SOG warriors as they battle to survive amid 10,000 enemy troops. Watch a Green Beret shot in the back four times and left for dead, who still has the courage to battle back ferociously against incredible odds. Shudder as an enemy soldier touches a Green Beret on a nighttime recon mission. Cringe as a Sergeant on SOG Spike Team Louisiana calls in an airstrike to break an enemy attack.

John Stryker Meyer is an American author and U.S. Army veteran, having served in covert reconnaissance with the Studies and Observations Group, also known as MACV-SOG. He has published two works of nonfiction related to his experiences in the Vietnam War.

Between 1964 and 1972, U. S. Green Berets and indigenous troops fought a secret war against communist forces in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam, as detailed in this new book by military historian Peter Van Buren. In defiance of conventional military doctrine, small teams of American soldiers fought “deep behind enemy lines” without air or ground support in order to sever supply routes for the North Vietnamese Army (PAVN). In the centerpiece of SOG Chronicles Volume One, author Peter Van Buren focuses on Operation Tailwind—a three-day mission by a Green Beret unit that rescued a reconnaissance team behind enemy lines and cut off the PAVN's sources of supply along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

SOG Chronicles

A secret war was fought across the fence in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam under the auspices of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam's top secret Studies and Observation Group. SOG's chain of command extended to the White House and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Small Green Beret-lead teams ran missions into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam without support from conventional artillery units. They made use of Air Force Tactical Air and helicopter units supplied by the South Vietnam Air Forces 219th Special Operations Squadron, code named Kingbees. In Laos 50,000 communist troops were dedicated to destroying SOG teams with highly trained sappers from the 305th Sapper Battalion.
