I'm the product of a happy and uneventful childhood in the suburbs of Cleveland, followed by a happy and pretty eventful four years as a student at University of Michigan. From there, I wandered to the West Coast, landing in Portland, Oregon, where I managed (somehow) to get a job as a writer. This had been my dream, of course, but I had no experience and no credentials. What I did have, in spades, was an abiding passion for storytelling and sentence-making. I fell in love with the experience of writing, and I've never stopped. From Portland, I moved to Boston, where I wrote for the Phoenix and the Globe, and then to New York, where I began writing for magazines, and, in 1987, published my first piece in The New Yorker. When Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bill Dedman noticed in 2009 a grand, unoccupied home for sale, he stumbled through a surprising portal into American history. Empty Mansions is a rich mystery of wealth and loss, connecting the vast Gilded Age opulence of the nineteenth century with a twenty-first-century battle over a $300 million inheritance. At its heart is a reclusive heiress named Huguette Clark, who lived alone for twenty years in a simple hospital room despite being in excellent health. Why were her valuables being sold off? Was she in control of her fortune or did someone else control it for her? Dedman has collaborated with Huguette Clark’s cousin Paul Clark Newell Jr. , one of the few relatives to have frequent conversations with her.

Jon Stewart is an American actor, comedian, activist, writer, producer, director, political commentator and television host. He hosted The Daily Show, a satirical news program on Comedy Central, from 1999 to 2015.
