In this landmark work of environmental history, William Cronon offers a sense of property and his pursuit of capitalism had upon the ecosystems of America's New England. Reissued here with an updated afterword by the author and a new preface by distinguished colonialist John Demos, Changes in the Land provides a brilliant interdisciplinary interpretation of how land and people influence one another. With its chilling closing line, The people of plenty were a people of waste, Cronon's enduring, thought-provoking book is ethnoecological history at its best.

Michael Pollan is an American author, journalist, activist, and the Lewis K. Chan Arts Lecturer and Professor of Practice of Non-Fiction at Harvard University. Pollan is also professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
